State of Michigan Reports First Case of Measles in Adult from Oakland County

On Friday, March 14, 2025, Michigan reported its first case of measles in an adult from Oakland County who recently returned from international travel. It is likely that exposures occurred during three (3) separate instances from March 3, 2025, to March 10, 2025, at a restaurant and a hospital in Rochester, Michigan, says Kate Guzman, Oakland County Health Officer.

Symptoms of Measles

  • Fever, which may rise above 104°F degrees.
  • Respiratory symptoms, such as a runny nose, cough, and red, watery eyes, and conjunctivitis (or pink eye).
  • Two (2) to three (3) days after symptoms begin, tiny, white spots, known as Koplik spots, may develop on the inner cheeks, gums, and roof of the mouth.
  • Three (3) to five (5) days after symptoms begin, a rash that is red, raised, and blotchy appears. It usually begins on the face and spreads to the trunk, arms, and legs.

Symptoms of measles typically start within seven (7) to fourteen (14) days after exposure but have also been reported to appear as long as twenty-one (21) days after initial exposure.

“We’re asking for you to be watchful of those symptoms,” Guzman said. “Please do not go to the emergency room if you have these symptoms without calling first. We need you to notify your healthcare provider so they can put the proper isolation protections in place to protect the public and other patients in that facility because measles is highly infectious.”
